SMTP E-Mail Configuration

Sending E-mail with NoteMaster
One of the useful features of NoteMaster is the ability to send the contents of a note as an e-mail. Because NoteMaster lets create great-looking notes that contain images right in the middle of the note text, NoteMaster is unable to use to the iPhone's built-in "Mail" app to send e-mail. Instead, NoteMaster has it's own e-mail client which can send e-mail directly from the app. Unfortunately, NoteMaster is not allowed access to existing settings from the built-in Mail app, which means you'll need to enter your e-mail settings again into NoteMaster in order to send e-mail.

E-mail Configuration
To configure the NoteMaster e-mail settings, tap on the Settings icon on the toolbar at the bottom of the main Categories screen:

settings_notemaster
The NoteMaster settings page has a section called "E-mail":

settings_email_easy

Choose "Easy Setup" to configure e-mail settings for common mail providers such as MobileMe, GMail, Microsoft Live/Hotmail, and AOL. If your e-mail provider is not listed under the easy setup, then you will have to configure e-mail via the "Manual Settings".

Manual Settings

The Manual Settings section provides a number of settings for email:
  • Sender E-mail - This is the "From:" address. Use this to specify the e-mail address you want the e-mails to be from. Typically, this would be your own e-mail address.
  • SMTP Server - These are the settings for the SMTP server you wish to use to sent outgoing e-mail.
  • Secondary SMTP Server - Specifies an optional secondary SMTP Server to use in the case that the main SMTP Server cannot be used to send mail. If specified, NoteMaster will first try to send mail using the primary SMTP Server, but if this fails, it will try to use the specified Secondary SMTP Server. In most cases, these settings are not needed.

SMTP Settings
SMTP settings are somewhat technical, and require you know the configuration of the SMTP server you use for email. If you already have the built-in Mail app set-up to send email, you can simply copy the settings from Mail (see Determining SMTP Settings below). Otherwise, you may need to obtain the correct values for these settings from your e-mail provider.

settings_smtp

  • Host Name - The server name of the SMTP server used to send email. For example, "smtp.server.com".
  • User Name - For SMTP servers that require authentication, this is your authenticated user name.
  • Password - For SMTP servers that require authentication, this is your authenticated password.
  • Use SSL - Use SSL encryption for sending e-mail.
  • Authentication - Type of authentication to use. Currently, only "Password" is supported.
  • Server Port - The port number to use to connect to the SMTP server.

Determining SMTP Settings
SMTP settings are specific to the e-mail service you are using to send mail. You may need to contact your e-mail provider to determine the correct values to use. If you already have the built-in Mail app set-up correctly to send e-mail, you can simply copy its SMTP server settings:
  • From the home screen, tap on the Settings icon.
  • Tap on the row labeled "Mail, Contacts, Calendars".
  • A list of e-mail accounts will be shown. Tap on the e-mail account you wish to use to send e-mail from NoteMaster.
  • Under the section "Outgoing Mail Server", tap on the row labeled "SMTP".
  • Under the section "Primary Server", tap on the name of the SMTP server.
  • You will be presented with a screen showing the SMTP server settings. Copy the following settings, and put them in the NoteMaster SMTP Server settings:
settings_mailapp
Write down these settings and use them for the NoteMaster SMTP Settings, and you are done!

Troubleshooting
If you have troiuble getting the SMTP client to work, here are some things to check:
  • Double-check that all SMTP settings in NoteMaster match the iPhone Mail SMTP settings exactly (See Determining SMTP Settings for more info). Make sure you use the SMTP Mail settings currently set in your iPhone. Do not copy settings from a different mail client or try to guess which ones to use.
  • Check to make sure the correct "Sender E-mail" is set for the account you are trying to send from. Some SMTP services require that this "From"
address match the account you are using.
  • Make sure you can send an e-mail from the built-in Mail app from the SMTP server you are trying to use. Some SMTP servers only allow you to
send from certain networks. For example, a home internet provider (cable, DSL) might only allow you to use their SMTP server while on your home network. Make sure you can send an e-mail from the iPhone's Mail app using the same SMTP server you are trying to use with NoteMaster.
  • Related to (3), the built-in Mail app allows for several "secondary" SMTP servers ("Other SMTP Servers" in the Mail Settings) that it will try
to use if the primary is not usable. This means you might think you are using the primary SMTP server successfully, but its really sending using one of the secondary ones. You can temporarily disable the secondary ones to make sure that indeed the primary SMTP server is usable from your network.
